“Besides the advantages already mentioned, I enjoy here a cozier, more profound and undisturbed retirement than anywhere else, as I am at a greater distance from the business of the town and the interruption of troublesome clients. All is calm and composed; which circumstances contribute no less than its clear air and unclouded sky to that health of body and mind I particularly enjoy in this place, both of which I keep in full swing by study and hunting. And indeed there is no place which agrees better with my family...” Pliny the Younger
Family Holidays at Casa Nova
We designed and equipped Casa dell’Ortolano (the Garden House) specifically with a view to those things that, from our own experience, go to make a relaxing and enjoyable family holiday for those travelling with younger children. We spent years looking for the perfect holiday rental that we’d want to go back to time and again: that’s what we set out to create here.
We have three children ourselves, who spent time here from toddler to teens and beyond, and so we can speak from our own experience of spending time at Casa Nova with kids across a pretty broad age range.
For suggestions for activities, sightseeing, and eating out in the area, see our pages on About Umbria and Art History.
Of the four bedrooms at Casa dell’Ortolano, two have a kingsize bed, one can be arranged either with a super-kingsize bed or with two singles, and the fourth (which is on the ground floor) normally has two singles but can if required be set up with three singles or a double and a single: see here. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom.
A highchair, cot and travel cot are available as are various other items of kiddy paraphernalia (such as changing mat and microwave steriliser). There is a good supply of books and dvds suitable for younger children and a selection of toys. A climbing frame, slide, swing, den and playhouse are located on a terrace behind the Casa dell’Ortolano, forming a rustic adventure playground (see photo above).
The pool (11m x 5m) is on a terrace below Casa dell’Ortolano. It is a bio-pool, so chlorine free, and is fenced for security. Since it is around 1m 20 in depth it is well suited to games such as volleyball but not suitable for diving.
Bikes are available in a variety of sizes (although you will need to supply your own helmets and check brakes and tyres before you set off).
