Our Story

We fell in love with this valley when we were students, cycling through it in 1988 on an artistic pilgrimage, following the trail of the many Renaissance artists who worked in this area. We promised ourselves that one day we would buy here.

It took a while to realise that dream. When we bought the main farmhouse and land in 2003, Casa Nova had been an organic fruit farm for some 20 years but the fruit trees were failing and the farmhouse had more holes in the roof than we had buckets. We spent the next 20-plus years investing in bringing the estate back to life in ways that respect and enhance the natural beauty of this exceptional location.

This has included restoring the main farmhouse (Il Casale), building Casa dell’Ortolano, taking out most of the old fruit trees and replanting olives, and starting Umbria’s first (and only) specialist iris nursery, with a display garden that opens to the public in May of each year. When you holiday here, we (sometimes quite literally) plough the income from holiday rentals back into our stewardship of the land.
